Personal Statement Writing: help writing personal statements

Personal statement writing is an incredibly complex process.  Students are left wondering…what information is supposed to be included? What is is the academics want to see?  How long should the document be, therefore how much detail is required?  I could go on, but you get the idea. Applications Writing is a very specific form of writing, so here are some professional tips to help you with your PS writing/writing personal statements.

All of this makes personal statement writing a confusing and overwhelming process which therefore leads to mistakes being made in the document. These mistake includes: the statement having no structure, the document being a simple re-hash of the CV or containing too much (or too little) relevant information, or the document not selling the applicant and their experience and skills at all.

Personal Statement Writing (PS Writing)

When it comes to writing personal statements it is important to try to understand what a personal statement is.  To do this, it is a good idea therefore, to listen to some academics, the professionals who are used to reading personal statements.  From this you will understand what they like to see, or not see as the case may be and some of the pitfalls you want to avoid in your personal statement.

To start you off I’ve found you a couple of very useful videos:

 

“What Makes a Good Personal Statement?” from the University of Birmingham

The University of Birmingham is one of the UK’s biggest and most reputable universities.  Ranked 15th out of 127 UK universities in the Complete University Guide league table for 2017 and 76th in the international ‘QS World University Rankings, 2016’.  Between the years 2013 and 2014 this university accepted 28,664 UK students and 5,467 students from overseas.  Therefore, it is safe to sat that this university knows a thing or two about writing personal statements.

Their video, “what makes a personal statement good” is exactly what it sounds like.  It is a 7 minute long video with professionals explaining what they think makes a personal statement good.  It has plenty of interesting tips and shows you some things you should avoid, so it is definitely worth a watch.

 

 

“Personal Statements: dos and don’ts” by Which? University

Most people will have heard of Which? magazine by now but have you benefited from it.  Founded in 1957 this magazine quickly gained popularity by offering impartial and valuable information to the general public.  This information is on a variety of important topics and delivered through supplements. Due to their usefulness, these supplements, became very popular and were therefore, transformed into their own magazines, in this case Which? Motoring. Now, the company has a range of magazines available and an abundance of experts writing their material.

This video is just over three minutes long, but packed full of useful tips on what to do and what not to do in your personal statement writing:
