Not setting clear goals:

To achieve anything in business you need a goal, something to aim for. Before you execute your internet marketing campaign, you first need to establish your business objectives, what do you want to achieve?  Every business has different objectives, ultimately they all want to be successful, but where this success comes from depends on what type of business you have.

For example, a blogger might want to increase visitors to their site, or subscriptions to their blog.  Someone who makes and sells jewellery might want to showcase their portfolio online to a wider audience.   A new start-up business might be looking to increase brand awareness and expand a customer base.  While a charity, might look to educate and tell a story to encourage donations.  Look at your business and decide what goals you have for that business.  You can have more than one goal, in fact, most companies do.

Once you have defined your objectives, you then need to set measurable goals for each objective.  For example, if your objective is to increase visitors to your website, your measurable goal could be to increase visitors by 50% within 6 months.  Setting smaller goals like this helps to keep you on track, it allows you to see where your campaign is lacking and where you can make changes to achieve your objectives.

Not testing or using analytics:

Analytics are a fantastic tool.  They help you to see how well you are marketing a website, how effective your campaign is and most importantly, which areas of your marketing campaign are working and which aren’t.  This not only helps you to make changes and improvements to your campaign, but it can also stop you from wasting your time and energy on things that just aren’t working. By not utilising this information, you could be limiting how successful your business becomes.

There are lots of analytics available, from a fully comprehensive website audit, to Google Analytics that show you the traffic to your website, to individual analytics, such as Facebook.  To properly analyse and test your internet marketing campaign, it is a good idea to use the information from all the analytics you have access too, including your website and your social media accounts.

Trying every new trend:

Yes, it is important to keep up with trends and changes in the industry.  And yes, you can hinder the success of your company by not moving with the times. However, jumping on every new trend could be just as damaging as ignoring changes in the industry altogether.  For example, now digital marketing is just as popular if not more popular, than traditional marketing.  A strong marketing campaign needs a good social media presence, among other things.  You might think that means you need an account on every social media site, but this isn’t the case. In fact it is better to have a strong social media presence on one social media site, than an average presence on many sites. Instead of being on every social media site, research to find out platform your customers use the most and focus on having a strong presence there.

You need to be realistic in how much you can manage.  Think about how much time you have to invest in your internet marketing campaign and collectively what skills and knowledge you and your team have. Don’t over complicate your digital marketing campaign or spread yourself too thinly.

Don’t target everyone:

Every company has a target audience, a group of people they want to attract to their business.  Instead of trying to make your business appealing to everyone, focus on targeting the right audience. To do this, you first need to define who your target audience are, this will vary from business to business.  Think about the kind of people who might like your services/goods, .  Are they male or female? Old or young? Are they a professional? Or located in a certain area?  Or a member of a particular religious group? Until you understand who your desired audience are, you will struggle to target the right group.

Once you have defined your target audience, you should then get to know them. Find out what they like and dislike, what their needs are, what problems they face, which social media platforms they use, when they are online, etc.  All of this will help you decide your marketing strategy, it will show you which social media sites to use, when to post and what to post, which will make your campaign much more effective.  You need to tailor your marketing strategy to suit your target audience.
